Pot Selection for the plants

The corner filled with plants adds beauty to your house, making it look gorgeous. If you ask me, it's a bridge between you and the environment. If you pair them with the pots which are the most suitable ones, pretty and outstanding but non-fragile, it will become the ‘center of attraction’ in your house!!

While selecting a right pot following factors are important;

  1. Plant size

  2. Material of the pots

  3. Drainage of the excessive water

  4. Color of the pot (optional)

Size of the plant

  • If the pot is too large, it contains a large amount of soil which takes a bit more time to dry.

  • If the pot is too small, obviously the reverse condition occurs and soil dries quickly. This condition creates a need for frequent watering and your plant might become root bound with dwarfing and loss of strength.

  • Keeping these 2 conditions in mind while choosing a pot for houseplants, check the size of the root ball first and choose a pot which is the same size as it. If the plant is a quick grower then buy a pot that is 2 to 4 inches larger in diameter.

  • When you see a growth and need to repot, get a pot which is 2 inches larger than its current size.

  • Remember do not suddenly repot your plant in a large pot.

For Example; if the current pot size is 4 inches then the next size will be 6 inches instead of double.

  • Next check the size of the roots. Plants having larger root systems can grow well in a deeper and wider pot. Smaller and shallower pots are suitable for succulents if you like them.

Material of the pot

So basically, there are 3 types of materials used for the pots. Let’s have a look at them;

Plastic pots

  • Plastic pots are lightweight, colorful and cheaper options for the pots. Usually you will get to see the plants potted in plastic pots if you visit any nursery to buy a plant.

  • Plastic pots are available in different shapes and sizes. They are extremely easy to use and clean.

  • Plastic pots hold moisture in the soil. They keep water for a longer time than other pots. So though you will not need to water frequently please check for the drainage hole at the bottom to prevent the plant from root rot.

  • The plastic pots get faded when exposed to the sun for a long time. You can change them in this case keeping the size in mind.

Note: Plastic pots are the best options for the hanging baskets or if you are planning to place them on a shelf. Ceramic and Terracotta pots are heavier and fragile for this purpose.

Ceramic pots

  • Ceramic pots come in various shapes and they look stunning but they are not a good option for the big houseplants.

  • They are good for the succulents or comparatively small plants.

  • I will not recommend purchasing ceramic pots for your plants as they are highly expensive.

Terracotta pots

  • Terracotta is the most preferred and perfect choice to pot the plants into it.

  • Terracotta are good options for those plants which require dry and well-aerated soil. Terracotta exactly does that as the soil drones quickly in Terracotta pots.

  • Terracotta pots are cheaper than ceramic pots and good for all types of plants with their natural color.

  • Make sure you don’t drop them down.

  • Terracotta does not tolerate extremely cold temperatures.

Drainage for the excessive water

  • The pot must have a drainage hole at its bottom as the plant cannot thrive well in standing water residing in the pot.

  • Cachepot is a good option for double-potting if you are choosing pots without drainage holes, but this is not recommendable.

Color of the pot

  • The pot color has a direct impact on the soil temperature. But generally it doesn’t matter that much.

  • If you choose terracotta or plastic pots with any color, it will not harm your plant at all .

Hope this is helpful for those who are looking for the pots to plant their friends into it who are waiting to thrive and give you happiness!! :)
