What happens with Rose plants?

The Rose plant is the most vibrant one as it grabs attention through its beautiful and colorful flowers.

Many times it happens when the Rose plant blooms for the first time and next time we don’t see any flower on it. It is an annoying condition for a plant lover. Why does this happen?

Let’s find out…

  1. Insects: The very common reason behind this crisis. Insects eat up the new, fresh buds before they bloom so the plants stop showing new flowers.

  2. Fertilizers: Overuse of fertilizers and high amounts of nitrogen in the soil.

   3. Poor soil: The soil with poor texture and lack of nutrients might also kill the plant.

   4. Not enough sunlight: Rose plants are Sun lovers. If the Rose plant wouldn’t have got enough
sunlight for at least 5-6 hours, they might droop down.

   5. Water needs: Thirsty plant during hot climate and root rot due to overwatering.

   6. Surrounding: Some uncertain climatic conditions like too hot or cold environment, strong
       winds, sharp rains etc.

   7. Pruning issues: If the plant is not being pruned annually or pruned on wrong time.

Summer care:               1.  Semi-shade sun that is a place where the plant will get sunlight filtered through shade. Direct Sun will harm your plant. The early
morning beam is best during Summer.

                                                   2. Water your plant once a day early morning to make it withstand the sun. Do not water the plant in the evening.

                                                   3. You can add some coco peat or coconut husk to the soil to hold the moisture for long time

                                                   4. Prune dead leaves and lower branches to avoid fungus growth

                                                   5. Don’t forget to add organic compost to the Rose plants to maintain plant health

                                                   6. Observe insect growth over the plant. Spray some natural pesticides like neem oil to get rid of insects.

                                                   7. It is a good practice to spray neem oil even if you don’t see any insect growth.

How to rescue a dying Rose plant?

  1. Avoid overwatering to stop fungal growth or black spot disease which ultimately causes dieback

  2. Make sure you have sterilized or cleaned the apparatus properly before using them to cut or prune the plant

  3. Cut out all infected branches until you see uninfected part of it and apply fungicide coating of turmeric or bavistin powder on the cut part of the branch and around the plant

  4. You can use liquid fungicide which can be sprayed on the stems in the soil to be absorbed by the plant roots

  5. Once you are done with these steps, keep your plant in such a place where it will get sun and shade both. It means do not keep the plant in direct sunlight.

  6. After a few days you will be able to see the new growth of the plant and then you can keep it in direct sunlight and start adding fertilizers.

Prevention plan for the Rose plant

  1. Remove weeds or any kind of unnecessary parasitic plant growth other than the Rose. plants which absorb the nutrition of the plants for their own growth.

  2. Removal of  dead flowers, yellow leaves, dead shoots with no growth and regular pruning is essential. October First week is the best time to prune.

  3. Turmeric can be applied as anti-bacterial on the pruned branches.

  4. DO NOT overwater, you can maintain a routine to water your plant with an adequate amount of water.

  5. The upper layer of the soil should be 2 inches dry before watering next time. That means you can water it every 4-5 days just to moist the soil and make sure the water is not excess enough to run out of the pot.

  6. Water can be sprayed twice a week to remove dirt and spider mites.

  7. Water the plant near the roots that is on the soil surface and not on top of the plant, it will add pressure on the plant top and force it to bend down

  8. Leave some space between the soil surface and edge of the plant so that the water and compost will be absorbed completely with ease.

  9. Check for the dead roots by moving the soil up and down, remove the dead roots if any. Keep the pot in the sunlight to avoid fungal growth.

  10. Rose loves Iron and calcium. Sprinkle some Iron dust and stone dust on the roots depending on the growth of the plant (10 inches plant - 2 teaspoons, 12 inches plant - 3 teaspoons, 14 inches plant: 4 teaspoons).

  11. Organic compost, vermicompost, used and dried tea powder, seaweed solution can be effective and safer compared to chemical fertilizers.

  12. Fertilizers can be added once in a month.

  13. Add antifungal substances like neem powder every six months before adding fertilizers.
