Health Benefits of Aloe Vera

Being an air-purifying plants Snake plant absorbs an excessive amount of Carbon Dioxide existing in the air.

Besides it improves the level of Oxygen and filters air from the toxins like Toluene, Xylene, Formaldehyde, Benzene, and trichloroethylene which cause cancer,

eye/throat Irritations, breathing issues, fatigue, etc.

Pot Selection

Choose a pot that can prevent it from falling over due to its long leaves and short roots. Terracotta pots are most preferable for planting. It must have

holes at the bottom to drain out excess water. It should be same or one size larger than its existing pot/container.

DO NOT go for planting it in the plastic pot as its small but strong roots would break the pot apart.

If you want to start with the seeds, sprinkle the seeds on the surface of the soil inside the pot. If the seeds are larger you have to press them a bit inside the soil.

Add a little amount of water to moisten the seeds.

Cover the pot with a plastic bag to lock the moisture inside it, it will help to speed up the germination process. For Germinating seeds keep it in direct sun until the green signs are visible.

So propagation of Snake Plants includes 4 types;

1.  By Rhizome Cuttings:   Rhizomes are underground small root-like structures grow on the stems that propagate new under the right condition.

2.  Division of Snake Plant:  If your plant is large enough, you can cut it into half. It will again start growing rapidly to its previous length.

3.  Snake Plant in the Soil (Leaf Cutting):  Take out a long leaf of your existing plant and cut it near the soil surface. Then cut this leaf into small pieces. Put these
cuttings in a dry place for a few days and then plant them in the soil.
Have some patience for at least 2 months to see the growth of the new one!

To propagate Snake Plant in water, take out a leaf of your existing plant, cut it near the soil surface and place it in a vase                                                                                   filled with the water.

You can place it in a shaded corner of your house where indirect but steady sunlight is available.

Change the water at regular intervals.

Snake Plants are pest-resistant but they attract slugs and snails towards it. Observe your plant if they chew off the plant leaves. You can make use of eggshells, copper tape or beer trap to protect your plants from these slow monsters.

While repotting the Snake Plant place it at the same depth in the new pot where it was in a previous post, So accordingly choose the pot. There should be 1-2 inches between the root ball and the edge/rim of the pot. Add or remove soil in the pot to set the plant properly inside it.

Cover the roots properly with the soil and shower little amount of water to settle down the soil at the roots and keep it moist.

  • Rest the plant for two weeks in a shaded corner/indirect sunlight to recover it from any damage happening during repotting.

  • Wait for at least one month after repotting for adding any fertilizer otherwise Fertilizers might burn the roots of the plant.

  • Do not overwater the plant (before as well as after repotting), overwatering will rot the roots of the plant or might invite any fungal issues on the roots.

Snake Plant Care

Balanced NPK 10-10-10 (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium in 10-10-10 percentage respectively) liquid fertilizers during the Spring and half diluted mixtures in the late summer are preferred for growing the Snake Plant.

70- 90 degrees Fahrenheit (20°- 32° Celsius) is the ideal temperature for the Snake Plant.

Snake plants can tolerate direct or indirect sunlight but more of the Sunlight means your plant would be much healthier and good looking. So place it in direct sun or a well lit up shaded corner of your house.

Rotate the pot at a regular interval so every leaf would receive enough sunlight.

A fresh all-purpose well-draining succulent potting mix should be preferred for Snake Plant. The soil should not be soggy as the roots of snake plants tend to be rotten  (pH range 4.5 to 8.5).

Don’t overwater it. No need to water your Snake Plant every day. Allow the soil to dry out enough (You can check it by touching soil surface) before watering next time. Do not sprinkle water on the leaves.
